Sloppy Joe Calzone

Why on earth did I put sloppy joe filling in a calzone? How could I not? I didn't want to miss the opportunity to create something truly spectacular! This won't disappoint, I promise.

And, since you're using frozen bread dough, this fun (and somewhat messy) dinner is super simple to prepare.

Sloppy Joe Calzone

1/2 pound lean ground beef
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup tomato sauce or marinara sauce
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 pound frozen bread dough, thawed according to the package directions
Cooking spray
2-3 tablespoons shredded cheese, such as cheddar, mozzarella, or Mexican cheese blend

Cook the beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking up the meat as it cooks. When the meat is browned all over, add the oregano, chili powder, onion powder, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute, until the spices are fragrant.
Add the tomato sauce, ketchup and yellow mustard and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes.
Roll the dough out into a large oval, about 14x9-inches. Spoon the beef mixture onto 1 half of the dough (from long end to long end). Like this:
Fold over the untopped side of the dough and pinch around the edges to seal. Transfer the calzone to a baking sheet that's been spray with cooking spray or lined with parchment paper. Spray the top with cooking spray and sprinkle the cheese over top.
It will look like this:
Let rise in a warm place, free from draft, for 45 to 60 minutes (this is important because we squished all of the air out, so now it needs to rise again).
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Bake the calzone for 15 to 20 minutes, until golden brown. Cool slightly before slicing and serving to happy faces!
